Good day everyone!
Hope you are doing well. I'm ready to share with you some inspiring photos, beautiful quotes and even my wonderful mood :)
So! This is our second post here in the MobilePhotography Section. And I'm going to talk a little bit about the age-old problem -- "Is Photography Art or is it absolutely ridiculous to think so"
There is a huge number of articles and videos on the Internet where people try to explain and prove that Photography is Art. And there are the same huge number of articles and videos where people argue against it.
I'll tell you what I think about this "big problem":)
But firstly I should say that I'm not a super-duper professional photographer with high experience. I'm just a young lady addicted to beautiful emotional pictures with opinions that I want to share and discuss with others. You can agree with it, you can argue about it, all good. And our life wouldn't be so interesting and many-sided if we all were the same:)
Fundamental question here is "What does Art mean?"
Here is what Wikipedia says:
"Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative or technical skill. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art."
And here are some thoughts of artists:
1. "Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth"- Pablo Picasso
2. "The mission of art is to represent nature not to imitate her." - William Morris Hunt
3. "I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." - Vincent Van Gogh
4. "Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and... stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to 'walk about' into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?" Wassily Kandinsky
5. "The goal of art was the vital expression of self" - Alfred Stieglitz
Do you agree with all these points of view?
- Yes. I completely agree with all of them
- I agree with some items
- I disagree with all those points and I have my own answer for the question you asked
All answers are correct. Whatever you choose.
Because there is no single correct definition of Art. Like there is no single definition for BEAUTY, for HAPPINESS, for LOVE.
We all are very different people, with our own special background, experience, problems, education, family relations... And all these imprint on our life perception.
My point of view is that Art is for pleasure, for getting different kinds of emotions. It's the absolutely perfect way to express your feelings and say something that you can't say with words.
Painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, music, literature, architecture, cinema, theatre... All these could or couldn't be art. And even more -- the same photo, the same painting, the same ballet etc. could be the Art for one person and absolute nonsense for another. It doesn't mean we have to shout ourselves hoarse that our opponent understands nothing. No, please. We are all civilized, educated and polite people here, aren't we?:) It just means that we all will never ever come to the general opinion about anything. And it's great!
A couple of days ago I found an article in The Guardian newspaper called "The $6.5m canyon: it's the most expensive photograph ever – but it's like a hackneyed poster in a posh hotel"
The author completely disagrees that Photography is Art. In his opinion, it's Technology and nothing more. But as I see it, it's the same as if I say: "I bought absolutely wonderful and very expensive brushes + the most expensive watercolours and now I'm an artist. Now I can paint 100% gorgeous pictures with all this stuff"
Of course if your point of view is opposite you can argue with him, become nervous, get a headache... but again. Don't do that. I need you all here happy and positive:)
And at the end I would like to ask you: when you feel comfortable, absolutely happy and joyful with someone, when you are ready to do all he/she needs, just to make him/her happy, do you care at the moment what this feeling is called? Sympathy, Tenderness, Friendship or Love? It doesn't matter at all! Because the main thing is what you feel, but not what it's called.
The same is with Photography. If you enjoy the picture, if it leaves the trace in your heart, if you forget about your problems even for a moment while looking at the photo, if you FEEL something - it's great! Leave all those "Is Photography Art" debates to others. Don't argue, it's a waste of time in this case. Better, go and grab a photo book, a magazine, etc. and enjoy!
